BED at Night
How to Stop Binge Eating at Night with Treatment from Dietitians in the St. Louis Area
What is night eating syndrome?
Night eating syndrome is an eating disorder characterized by a pattern of nocturnal food intake and associated distress in regards to the behaviors. Key components include:
- Evening Hyperphagia: Consuming at least 25% of daily food intake after the evening meal.
- Nocturnal Ingestion: Waking up to eat at least once during the night.
- Insomnia: Difficulty sleeping or staying asleep, often due to the need to eat.
- Morning Anorexia: Lack of appetite in the morning
- Mood Disorders: Depressions and/or anxiety, which exacerbate in the evening.
“Why do I binge eat at night?”
This can be for a variety of reasons, such as severely restricting food intake early in the day and emotional factors such as stress, anxiety, depression, or boredom.
Causes of Binge Eating at Night
Other causes could be dysregulation in one’s circadian rhythms which can influence hunger and eating patterns, where appetite increases in the evening due to hormonal changes, making it harder to resist eating, moreover, established deconstruction patterns with working or watching TV late can reinforce nighttime eating. Those with sleep disturbances are often at higher risk as insomnia can lead to increased hunger, specifically with foods that are more nutrient dense which can then result in nutritional deficiencies – it’s a vicious cycle unfortunately.

I have been sending patients to Branz for a while now and there is nobody I trust more than these nutritionist and dieticians. They actually care about you and take a deep dive into your life to see what all is the reason or reasons that you cannot obtain the results you are looking for. They provide a great plan on how to get you from A to B in the best way possible. My favorite part of their care is when a patient comes back and tells me how thorough they have been in covering what is going on. HeatherTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We’ve worked with Branz Nutrition Counseling on several occasions, and each experience has been exceptional. The team is incredibly knowledgeable and professional, but what really sets them apart is how down-to-earth and approachable they are. Talking about food and eating behaviors can be very vulnerable—much like discussing any other mental health concern—and it makes a huge difference to work with people who meet you with kindness and zero judgment. The team at Branz truly makes people feel supported. They’re not there to lecture or shame; they’re there to help. We’ll continue to refer people to Branz because we trust they’ll be met with compassion, respect, and real expertise.
