Manage ADHD and Overcome Anorexia with Outpatient Treatment and Nutrition Therapy with Registered Dietitians in the St. Louis Area

Link Between Anorexia and ADHD

The relationship between these two disorders may be co-occurring, but the exact relationship between them is rather complex and not fully understood. Some shared features that may cause an overlap between the two are control difficulties and neurobiological factors.

Why do people with ADHD struggle with eating?

A reason those struggling with ADHD may also struggle with eating include distractibility, impulsivity and difficulties with executive functioning. Medication side effects can also play a role. One might struggle with meal planning, which can lead to irregular eating times and impact their food decision and appetite. Throw in sensory sensitivities and that can further complicate things.

Treatment of anorexia with ADHD

Treatment for individuals with both disorders often involves addressing symptoms of both conditions through a multidisciplinary team with an eating disorder dietitian (us at Branz Nutrition), a therapist, psychiatrist, and a PCP/Pediatrician to name a few. It’s also important for the caregivers of those struggling to understand the issues above in order to help those with ADHD to develop strategies to support healthier eating habits.

Does insurance cover nutrition therapy for anorexia?

We are in-network with many insurance companies. Insurance-based nutrition counseling is based on your insurance provider’s approval and specific insurance plan. We can only provide services based on what they allow, following their specific guidelines. Such perimeters include:

  • Requiring a certain amount of time in between appointments
  • No additional support between appointments
  • Check your medical nutrition therapy benefits here.

While nutritional counseling can be beneficial for various conditions, we find that, specifically for those suffering from disordered eating, continuous support and ongoing accountability is the game changer in achieving recovery.

We believe that full recovery is possible with the right support and treatment. We look forward to being part of your healing process.
