What is a non-diet dietitian?
A non-diet dietitian supports a Health at Every Size, Intuitive Eating Approach versus succumbing to another diet to attempt to improve one’s relationship with food. As non-diet dietitians in Missouri and Illinois, we work with patients (online and in-person) to help them achieve wellness and heal their relationship with their body.
Here are some key principles of the no-diet dietitian approach and what we do at Branz Nutrition:
- Reject diet culture
- Focus on intuitive eating
- Emphasize overall well-being
- Personalize nutrition
- Body positivity and acceptance (HAES)
- Sustainable habits
- Address emotional eating
- Collaboration with healthcare professionals (for a comprehensive approach)
- Education and empowerment.
What is the no-diet approach to weight loss?
A no-diet approach to weight loss is actually putting weight loss on the backburner and focusing on improving one’s relationship with food through the lens of an intuitive eating mindset. We work to challenge any food rules and beliefs we may have regarding previous diets they have been on. While weight loss is not the primary focus with a no-diet approach, it can occur by normalizing eating and movement behaviors.
What is the non-diet approach for dietitians?
A non-diet approach is taking all the previous things you may have been told or instructed to do on the “old” diets and work to challenge the mindset around these behaviors to help improve your overall relationship with food, weight, body, and self. We focus on the intuitive eating principles and a health at every size approach to move towards food freedom.
What is the non-diet approach to HAES?
A non-diet approach to HAES is working to accept and be at peace that we all genetically come in different sizes and shapes and that being “thinner” does not equate to being healthier. Just like we all genetically have different eye color, hair color, heights and shoes sizes, we all naturally come in different weight sizes too, which is NORMAL.

What is the weight-neutral approach of a dietitian?
A weight-neutral dietitian focuses on weight not being the sole reason one may or may not be healthy. Weight is a small component of the equation to health and if we only focus on weight as an indicator of health, we set ourselves up to stay on the path of yo-yo dieting.
The Negative Health Effects of Yo-Yo Dieting (Weight Cycling) Include:
- Metabolic slow down
- Muscle loss
- Increased risk of chronic disease
- Psychological stress
- Nutrient deficiencies
- Strain on cardiovascular health
- Hormone imbalance
- Weakened immune system

Super knowledgeable and very helpful! 10 out of 10!!! - SIFU Eric ToenniesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have been sending patients to Branz for a while now and there is nobody I trust more than these nutritionist and dieticians. They actually care about you and take a deep dive into your life to see what all is the reason or reasons that you cannot obtain the results you are looking for. They provide a great plan on how to get you from A to B in the best way possible. My favorite part of their care is when a patient comes back and tells me how thorough they have been in covering what is going on. Loshi VueTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I can’t say enough great things about this practice! The team brings professionalism, heart, and deep clinical expertise to every discussion. Their initiative to keep learning, growing, and leading within the field of nutrition truly sets them apart! HeatherTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We’ve worked with Branz Nutrition Counseling on several occasions, and each experience has been exceptional. The team is incredibly knowledgeable and professional, but what really sets them apart is how down-to-earth and approachable they are. Talking about food and eating behaviors can be very vulnerable—much like discussing any other mental health concern—and it makes a huge difference to work with people who meet you with kindness and zero judgment. The team at Branz truly makes people feel supported. They’re not there to lecture or shame; they’re there to help. We’ll continue to refer people to Branz because we trust they’ll be met with compassion, respect, and real expertise. Shawna RicheyTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Working with Michelle Wilson, RD, has been such a gift. Michelle’s warmness and professionalism shine through in every interaction, and she creates an environment where clients feel safe, supported, and truly cared for. As someone who frequently refers clients her way, I have complete trust in Michelle’s expertise and compassionate approach. I know that anyone I send to her will be met with thoughtful, individualized care, and that peace of mind is invaluable. I cannot recommend Michelle and Branz Nutrition Counseling highly enough! Hannah MilksTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Working with Michelle Wilson is a joy. She approaches each person as a human, not a "patient". She naturally balances humor and light heartedness with the necessary dedication, thoughtfulness, and empathy required to create meaningful change in people's lives. I highly recommend working with Michelle. Megan GleicherTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I cannot recommend Michelle enough.
